NelsonMandela“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”
~ Nelson Mandela, A true & exceptional leader
On December 5th, 2013, we lost a great man, a great leader and an inspiration to the entire world. Nelson Mandela, born as the son of tribal chief in a nation where black people had no rights, would rise to be elected as the first black president of a democratic South Africa. What a trajectory he experienced during his 95 years on the planet! His funeral and the mourning period following his death became a time of celebration of his life, with much singing and dancing. There was even a rainbow during his state ceremony. Some have even called his life an archetype of Christ consciousness as he readily forgave all who had punished him in the past.
With all the news coverage that occurred around his illness, death and state funeral, much has been said about the man, his democratic but activist politics, his changing philosophies, his numerous awards and his wonderful quotes. So here are a few things you won’t hear in the media about his Human Design and how it determined the path that he took through life.
Nelson Mandela was born a Projector. As a Projector, he’s here to be wise, and to guide and direct those around him. Projectors should wait to be invited as their decision-making strategy, and also wait to be invited to give advice. It’s hard to pinpoint each of the big decisions in Mandela’s life and say whether it was an “invitation” or not. However, it seems as though his eventual successes in life were most likely the result of waiting to be invited following his release from jail in 1990. He may have been a little more headstrong and determined to make things happen his way during his time leading up to imprisonment, which happened around 40 years old. But after his release, his forgiving demeanor, his democratic philosophy and his resolve to make things happen peacefully were obvious to all. He really came out of jail a different man – more sophisticated, a self-educated lawyer, and more soft-spoken. And many of the steps he took were the result of invitations, such as being part of the ANC (African National Congress) party, and helping to make sure that they won the election following the fall of apartheid rule, but then being selected as the President of South Africa, once they had won.
Mandela had a number of life themes that served him well throughout his life. His three defined channels were: Talent, Alpha and Awareness. The channel of Talent includes the Gates of Enthusiasm and Depth. Put them together and you get someone who is determined to get to the bottom of a subject or issue, finding out everything there is to know about it, and then presenting it enthusiastically to whomever will listen! The Channel of the Alpha combines Influence and Democratic leadership to describe the alpha personality of a brilliant, influential lawyer with idealistic goals for freedom for all in South Africa. The Channel of Awareness is also known as the Channel of the Thinker. And did he! Before, during and after prison, Mandela was one to figure things out in a holistic manner –not too logical, not too abstract, but just right for the times and for his people to succeed. He had rustled quite a few feathers in his country prior to prison, but in prison, as his politics gelled, he found better ways to befriend his jailers, correspond with allies on the outside and become a model prisoner as well as a well-known anti-apartheid activist, with maximum privileges. Each of these channels played a major role and meshed well together to make him the man he would become as he re-entered the world stage in 1990.
Mandela’s Incarnation Cross (the mythology of his life) is called the Left Angle Cross of Obscuration. The Incarnation Cross represents the top four gates in the chart, and is about 70 percent of your personality. Mandela’s Cross description is: These are “people who can use details/statistics to dazzle or obscure. Once sorted, obscure details can lead to extraordinary discovery.” I think that Mandela’s depth of knowledge about the politics of South Africa, his knowledge of the details, as well as caring about the outcome for all, helped him to play out his Incarnation Cross in a way that served all citizens of South Africa. There is still enormous work to be done, but without his effective concentration on the deconstruction of apartheid and his willingness to involve the leaders of the world in this righteous movement, the situation may have taken much longer to change.
Finally, his Chiron return is in the gate of the Love of Spirit. Turning 50 in prison, with a life sentence ahead of him, it’s likely that his spirit turned, too. He moved into the life’s purpose that he was destined for – through his own lessons with Spirit, he was ready to help others to find their own path to Spirit via forgiveness, understanding, and love.
